I have installed Pebble on this configuration in the last few months.
I have also installed FreeBSD based M0n0wall on the same hardware,
with only an 8Mb Compact flash. Has nothing to do with age. I haven't
seen a 386 in years, I see 486 special embedded platforms every day. I
wouldn't want to try to find a distribution that would install, much
less run on a 8MB RAM system. I don't know what the minimum
requirements for Damn Small Linux are, but that's another option.

There are several versions of m0n0wall, including a CDROM system that
doesn't require any hard drive. You can download from
http://m0n0.ch/wall/downloads.php

But this conversation is about Linux, not m0n0wall, OpenBSD, etc.
