I run Suse 10/10.1 x86_64 on several machines. Libraries are supplied in both 64-bit (/lib64, /usr/lib64) and 32-bit versions (/lib/usr/lib), so either 32-bit or 64-bit executables can find what they need. There have been glitches with compatibility with specific programs which have led me to compile or install the 32-bit x86 executables and remove the 64-bit version, but I don't think I've seen the opposite problem (a 32-bit program wouldn't work). Of course if a program is looking for some older version of a specific library, it might be disappointed with what's there. Older versions of Java InstallAnywhere punk out, e.g., I think because of issues with libc version. But this is true on 32-bit machines as well. I you have an example I would be interested.
