Running openSUSE 10.1, if I spelled it right. Today's exercise was
inspired by a fairly long thread on alt.os.linux.suse discussing
whether it would be possible to add a text message to the login splash
screen. There are two different documented ways of doing this,
neither of them works in 10.1. Also there was much acrimony and
confusion between Display Manager and Window Manager.

My simple-minded take on this is that the Display Manager puts up the
Login screen. There you possibly get the choice of a few different
Window Managers, and can enter your user name and password.

So -- after a fair amount of digging around, I discovered where the
graphics are hidden for the two Display Managers -- KDE and Gnome.
 /opt/kde3/share/app/kdm/themes/SUSE/Background.jpeg (91541 bytes)
 /opt/gnome/share/gdm/themes/GDM-SuSE/Background.jpeg (91541 bytes)
In fact these two files are not only the same length but also the same content.

So I took GIMP and made two files just like the original, except one
of them had the text KDE displayed in the top center, and the other
had the text Gnome. Moved the originals to another name, and put the
modified versions in their places.

Logged out, got the login screen with the Gnome text. Logged in,
everything still OK. There is another graphic that looks just like
this but is used for the default window background after logging in.
I didn't look for that one.

Logged out, got again the Gnome background, asked for a KDE login
instead. Logged in, got a KDE desktop. Logged out, got the KDE
background login screen. Side note, the Gnome login screen has a
single box for User name, which then is replaced by a box for
Password. The KDE login screen has two boxes, one above the other.

Asked for a Gnome login. Logged in, got a Gnome desktop but noticed
that the running display manager was /opt/kde3/bin/kdm. Logged out,
got KDE login screen, logged in and got Gnome desktop. Still kdm
running.

I have spend the rest of the day trying to figure out what part of
what control file specifies the initial Display Manager. One would
think that it was /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager but I can't see
anything there. Besides that, it has a timestamp of 23:42 last night,
and the Gimp-ed files that I built are timestamped 08:48 and 08:49
this morning. So I was not fooling with Display Manager displays last
night.

Any useful clues that i have missed? I saw in an old manual that SuSE
7.0 YaST had a "login configuration" option to choose the Display
Manager. Nothing like that in SUSE 10.1 YaST2.
