One of the tables I'm compiling is a list of ISO, IEEE, and European

Let me ask a semi-related question: are you able within the
spreadsheet to sort a column and have the rows stay together. i.e.
use one entry as a sort key for all rows. I was unable to do that in

sort(1) to sort on the desired column, and then import the result back
to the spreadsheet.
Oh. Penny drops. Can't you specify that the column in the
spreadsheet is of type alpha, not type numeric?
