Is CVS considered "good enough" or do you advocate SVN, bitkeeper, TLA, Merucruial or something else?
That depends on what you are using version control for. If you do or need any of the following, SVN is better over CVS - Put binary files in version control. CVS does not have a way to deal with binary files. The only thing you do in CVS with binaries is to tell it not to expand $...$ tags. - Rename directories, move files between directories, etc. SVN tracks both, CVS does not. - Cross linking of projects. For eg: a piece of project1 would be nice to check out under project2's directory structure since it uses it. - Fine grained access control - Authentication against a variey of mechanisms There's more. Keep in mind that keeping up with the Jones's is not an excuse to switch to SVN. -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
