Yeah, to be close to an apples to apples comparison.. you'd need to
add up compiles for:
- Kernel
- Base libs (glibc at least)
- X11
- at least 1 window manager (and probably either gnome or kde since
they each have things like nautilus for GUI filesystem browsing)
- at least one editor (hey, windows has notepad and usually wordpad).
- firefox or another browser
Probably a few other utilities.
Which just shows that on a linux box, you can choose to only build
what you need.. like you can avoid most x11 stuff for a server
(especially headless).
I also recall reading jwz talking about early builds of Netscape (long
before it bloated in the 4.x releases) taking many hours.
