What variety of laptop is it? On many, it is a fairly trivial
exercise to replace the whole keyboard. Unfortunately, eBay does not
have a separate category for laptop keyboards, so you have to wander
mostly through "Desktop & Laptop Components" and "Desktop & Laptop
Accessories".

For future protection, you could get a keyboard condom, found by
searching "keyboard skin'" in the main "Computers & Networking"
category. Perhaps this would just be a new challenge to the cat.

So did it type anything interesting?

I talked with a laptop repair guy who quote $80 for a keyboard
and $65 to replace, which I suppose is a fair price for a commercial
solution .... but I am a CB and it pained me to go that route.

Hah! I knew I could fix it. I found a cheap chicklet keyboard I had
around and stole a keycap and lever mechanism from it ... tada
I was able to install them. I had to move both the key cap and the
lever mechanism since the lever mechanism was different between
the two keyboards. But fortunately the lever mechanism from the
donor keyboard fit the metal substrate, which has some little tabs
to hold the lever mechanism in place.

Now I have one problem key left. The PgUp on the lap top is about
1/8th inch narrower than any key from the donor keyboard. I guess
I will get out my Jeweler's saw and hack one of them down. The lever
mechanism seems the same .... stay tuned.

That should wipe the smile of that damn cat's face.

Forward,

BobLQ
