Is the battery just always dead then? If not, how do you recharge it?

There is continual discussion in the newsgroup comp.sys.laptops about
batteries that don't charge. A frequent problem is a broken connector
where the power supply plugs into the laptop. Of couse another
problem is a battery that has succumbed to old age.

Will the computer run from the charger with the battery disconnected?

One of the few redeeming features of Windows XP is a graphic tabular
battery display, that shows the voltage and current in the charging
circuit.

Another thought: there are at least two different varieties of
Thinkpad power adapters. The older is rated for 48 watts, the newer
72 watts. Each at 16V.
