apropos is actually just the -k option to the man(1) com-
% uname -a

I thought apropos was an alias for "man -k" that someone turned into a
command, but I don't know why I think that. Someone I respected probably
said something in passing, and it passed the plausibility filter and
ended up in the "unattributed facts" database...
Hey, guys. I think I first came across "apropos" as a command in
4.1BSD, circa 1980. A check of my 4.4BSD manual set says "Apropos
first appeared in 3.0BSD". It strikes me as a Bill Joy-ism, which
would be appropriate since Joy was one of the main producers of
3.0BSD.
For the proof-readers among you, note that "apropos" has 2 p's while
"appropriate" has 3.
