I've had _some_ success with politely refusing to specify what was
acceptable to me, until after they could mention a range.

I'd say something like "I'm sure your company follows industry practices
wrt salary, and salary is not the most important factor in consideration
of.. but I would like to hear at least a rough range, before I could..".

After hearing their range, I would respond with something (still
non-committal) like "I would probably expect to fit into the middle (or
high-middle, or..) of your category.

..jim
