Ah...  This is what I was hoping would come out of this thread.  I'm
not in a position to dictate or influence what software we use, but
I'm going to check out cfengine anyway, for personal edification.

It sounds pretty slick.  The way you make it sound, you can basically
create a profile for what a computer should look like when it's in a
certain role.  Then you just add machines to a role and cfengine makes
them look like they're supposed to.

And looking at the website, that's exactly what it does, including
support for overlapping roles or "classes".
