They do block incoming traffic on port 25 (SMTP) by default, but they
will open that port for your account on request. One thing to be
aware of is that they will send notices about your account to your
dslextreme email address, so be sure to set it up to forward to an
address that you check regularly (I missed the deadline to renew my
contract the first year because of this).

I've had them twice. The current contract started yesterday. I get them when I can't do cable modem for some reason (faster) and I don't do Speakeasy for some reason (more expensive for some plans & sometimes I can get DSLExtreme
when Speakeasy can't reach my area). For Linux users they are much
better than SBC (now AT&T again).

None that I'm aware of.

AFAIK

Actually, my last place I was so close to a repeating station that DSLExtreme graciously gave me MORE bandwidth for same or cheaper price than SBC IIRC.
Cable will be faster yes. I'm not sure I notice all that much.

Correct. See DSLExtreme. They even have an online PHP Chat app I love to
avoid lame phone menus and waiting on hold.

This is why I avoid SBC/AT&T. DSLExtreme modem appears to your laptop like a normal Ethernet port so there are no OS issues. IIRC SBC/AT&T like to use
PPPoE which is a pain since I'm not as familiar with it.

DSLExtreme is good. I'd recommend them.

Hope that helps.
Chris & others,

Thanks for the comments about dslextreme. They seem to have plans similar to speakeasy, but a bit lower in price. I'm keen to switch away from Cox; may do so in the next couple weeks.
