It's been a long while since I've done anything with V4L, but I believe
there are some folks on this list that are up to speed on it.
Short story: I'm installing a jacuzzi in my place and will be installing
an entertainment system as well - yea, just like the gangster movies ;)
I plan to install a PC that will connect to one of our several satellite
DVR receivers as well as to my network. I have a server and plenty of
disk space for storage of movies and music. I'd like to be able to play
back DVDs, content from the DVR (which has optical, component, and
S-Video outputs) including live TV, and content from the server and
watch it/listen to it while relaxing in the jacuzzi. I'd like to do it
all using Linux. To keep from getting the PC, etc. wet (the jacuzzi will
make lots of steam, which will permeate everything in the room that's
not water tight), there is a closet on the opposite side of the wall
from the jacuzzi allowing for plenty of room for equipment. The flat
panel will be sealed in a cabinet with a plexiglass front. The DVR has a
UHF remote that works from anywhere in the 1700 sq. ft. house.
I plan to buy a new PC soon, but I have two Athlon systems with AGP
slots as well that could possibly be used? So, the questions are, what
hardware is recommended (especially video and audio cards) for this?
What's the best software available for Linux for this? What about remote
control for the PC itself (so kybd and mouse aren't needed)?
While I don't have much experience with it, it sounds like MythTV will
fit your bill. In conjunction, check out the list of tv tuners
supported by the ivtv project
(http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Supported_hardware).
