If you go for Mythtv, i recommend pc hdtv. It will save you some driver headaches. From my knowledge, some nvidia cards have hardware mpeg decoders that are supported on linux. But to take advantage of that you have to install 3rd party drivers. Also I don't think the hardware decoder supports HD quality.
Knoppmyth is a project to check out. If you are looking for something more persistent, ubuntu 6.10 has packages for mythtv. If you do the ubuntu route, i suggest using xubuntu to have less overhead (you won't be using a desktop im assumming).
