/etc/init.d/gpm, and standard /etc/rcN.d links

but you may need to install a gpm package.

Heh?! A quick Google shows it your Alpha way, my way, and all lower-case.

Gus might have other suggestions. Only other thing I can think of is
seeing if xev (on FC, it's in xorg-x11-utils) gives any clue, or even
something like 'cat /dev/input/mice' (as root) and CTRL-C after a wiggle
or 2.
