Do you have users on the system ? If so, then
kernel upgrades are a good thing. If it's a DB
server in a back-DMZ or some other similarly
protected scheme from local exploits then you can
be more conservative on your patching. My
experience is that the RHEL patches are generally
very well tested and don't break anything
(generally). I had one RHEL kernel upgrade on
RHEL that did affect IOwait for IO intensive
applications, but that has since been corrected
and it didn't affect everyone... very few machines actually.
Now the obvious: Read the errata. If you need it,
do it. If you don't... then you can decide.
Usually the "Updates" include more than a kernel,
but if you have been doing your up2dates, but
excluding the kernel* packages, then I guess you will only get the kernel. :o)
