This is the tip that did the trick. Thanks to all who offered help.

I was not associating the channels with a source (capture card). I did
that, and mythfilldatabase populated the list witn place holders that were
filled by the cron job overnight.

I have other, minor questions that I will open new threads on. But my
self-respect has been bolstered by not having to reinstall.
