So, in a real small nutshell, we're looking for a company that can
provide the following skills and support for the following
systems/areas, on a 1 year contract:
Windows Server administration (W2K3).
Active Directory.
Exchange administration.
IIS administration.
Apache administration.
Windows XP and 2000 desktops.
Solaris and Sun administration.
BSD administration.
Linux administration (RHEL and Fedora).
Samba and NFS.
Open LDAP
MS SQL administration.
MySQL administration.
Symantec Backup Exec.
Network and computer security (currently, it's bad, but I've seen far
worse).
Other networking knowledge including DNS, routing, T1 and other
broadband technologies, 3Com switches, etc.
So, can anyone here recommend a company and give me a ballpark figure of
what such a contract would cost? (I know what I would charge - a bundle
- but that doesn't help me to know what *good* local companies would
charge.)
Uh, wow. I understand why your IT guy wants to quit.
First, that isn't one outsourcing. It's probably two. You'll need to
split the Windows and Unix functions to give yourself a lot greater choice.
Second, it's going to cost your company a *fortune*.
Third, outsourcing is unlikely to work. You don't have anybody to give
the outsourced companies direction.
The myth of outsourcing is that it saves money and time. It sometimes
saves money. It never saves time.
With that amount of complexity, you will need someone full time just to
manage the outsourced functions.
Your company needs to suck it up and start putting an actual IT staff in
place.
However, I suspect that I am preaching to the choir.
