You have to remember that two hundred and fifty years ago, certain colloquialisms that once graced the language are different now. "...God-given rights..." did not directly mean rights given to all people by an absolute deity creator-persona; instead, it meant "rights granted upon all people by virtue of being people." Things could be God-given even if you didn't believe in God. Thus, sayings like, "...under God's green earth..." and whatnot live on, even though the real meaning of the words is much less direct than the actual verbage may imply.
