Let me turn it around....if marriage is really just filing a few legal papers at the courthouse then why is it such a big deal for people to get married?

This is something else that the Churches grabbed control of so that they could have even more control of the people. There were no marriage contracts in many societies before Christianity. Then too, businesses got involved in making marriages something that would put the new couple or their parents in hock for years.

The "Greenwood Marriages" of the early tribes were trial marriages to see if the couple COULD have children. They generally lasted for a year and a day, and if no offspring was produced they could try again with someone else. At that time Children were a necessary part of the family in order to keep food on the table and a fire in the hearth.

We must remember that the social climate today is much different than previously. Marriages then were made for far different reasons than now. The Women generally had little say about it except in the Pagan societies.
