I would rather live with OT pain than go to moderation.
I agree.
The "Derailleur" approach sounds most promising to me. A notice of the
switch can be posted to -list, and as someone remarked, interested
parties who are unwilling to subscribe to (or examine archives of)
-kooler is not the concern of the poster.
I like this. But what about plain 'ole "slap 'em around a bit and see if
they'll shape up".
What about this:
1. All the regulars of this list take the initiative to start threads on
and move threads they're involved with to the kooler when they first
become OT. I for one will sure do that from now on.
2. Automatically (one per month?) post a canned message to the list
telling everyone to take anything that is/becomes OT to the kooler. Give
it a unique subject line so subscribers can /dev/null and never see
them, and don't let them into the archives. I hate these kind of
messages that come out on several lists I subscribe to, but maybe it's
the lesser of the evils.
3. Anyone who is annoyed/offended/whatever by OT posts, say so when it
happens, and others be respectful and move discussions to the kooler. If
people persist, give 'em notice and blacklist them for a while.
This wouldn't be a foolproof solution but it might help enough to make
the list more appealing to those dissatisfied with the current situation.
I understand that people shouldn't have to put up with OT posts at all
and no one should have to remind others about this stuff, but maybe
that's the price to be paid for an easy-to-use, lively, by-and-large
on-topic list.
