Well I finally got it going.

I am still not quite sure what kept it from
working before (other than the pam stuff,
which I disabled)

It seems the magic thing is to goto
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/

and follow the instructions religiously on a clean
system. I did this several times. I suppose I am not
good at following instructions. No I know I am not
good at following instructions ... but finally it worked.

I need an instruction following helper who does not
have ADD :)

I have no idea what string to put in as "printer_queue" though.

Meanwhile I have found a problem with setting up cupsd to
add a printer that involves pam authentification about which I
know nothing aand really wish not to know anything ...
