The good news is I got MythFE working over the network. Tha other news is,
it pauses exery ten seconds or so for about a half second.
The back end is on a prism wireless connection configured vanilla.
Anything I can do to boost throughput? The router is d-link DI-624
"airplus xtreme". The FE is on 100 mb cat 5.

Two possible problems. One, the wireless link isn't fast enough to feed
the data. If you had a wired 10baseT connection you could probably get
away with it. However, if you are only operating a 802.11b connection
(supposedly 11mbps) it won't work because you don't really get that
bandwidth. To check your connection, do:
$/sbin/iwlist eth1 bitrate
Substitute your wireless interface for eth1. If it doesn't show at least
18mbps it probably isn't going to work. You MUST use at least 802.11g
in order to get enough bandwidth.
If you have enough bandwidth, the other possible problem might be not
enough horsepower on the frontend. You probably need at least a Pentium
733MHz in order to play back the recordings without an XvMC accelerated
video card. Note that laptop CPU's throttle back and may be running much
slower than their given rating, especially when on battery. Some laptops
use a desktop CPU which is permanently throttled back but the
manufacturer won't tell you.
