Quoting the original post:

"I'm primarily interested in indexing things like /usr/include,
/usr/man, etc. so that when I need to figure out which blasted file has
the definition for ENOBUFS I don't have to digging all over creation. "

I thought that was a pretty clear request to index the contents.

Thinking back, this was one of the neat features available with
NeXTstep. I recall the descriptive term "inverted index".

Doing a search at www.google.com/linux with search term "inverted
index" or search term "full text index" turns up a few interesting
leads. But I have no actual experience with any of them.
