You can install kubuntu...which is kde+ubuntu, or xubuntu, which is
xfce+ubuntu. Or you could install ubuntu-server, and then apt-get
install kubuntu-desktop(kde), ubuntu-desktop(gnome), or
xubuntu-desktop(xfce). It's pretty simple. You can also install normal
Ubuntu and use synaptic to install kubuntu-desktop, and you'll get a
choice between kde/gnome. Can't imagine it being any simpler.

I can. I can imagine either

1)An install time option allowing you to choose. Whichever you choose is installed. They can default it to whichever they wish, I'm not that picky.

OR

2)Pop up a choose desktop dialog upon first boot

OR

3)Install both, choose either you want as a default but provide an easy too to switch between the two. For example, a GUI that pops up with a list of desktops, and allows you to pick one.

Lets face it, for a desktop machine the number one concern is the window manager. Not giving a choice in the matter, or requiring a user to jump through hoops to get that choice, is completely unacceptable. I've seen any of the 3 above options in use for the past decade, by a wide variety of distros. Until Ubuntu starts using one of those or a close analog, I would never, ever consider installing it. Its a moronic way of handling the biggest part of a desktop machine. It can be as polished as it wants in every other manner, if it doesn't let me pick my windowing environment, its at the bottom of the list for usability.

This isn't even a rant about wether KDE or Gnome or some other thing should be the default, I really don't care. Its about ease of choice. If in order to choose I need to jump through hoops, I'm using another distro.
