A truly free (GPL) alternative to VMware is VirtualBox
<http://www.virtualbox.org>, which does pretty much everything that
VMware can do. They make money by providing a few non-free extras like
USB virtualization.


QEMU (see for explanation) < http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qemu
can create VMware virtual machines from QEMU virtual machines.
