In that case, Infrant http://infrant.com. (I have an X6).

Can you actually get to a Linux prompt without tearing the box open?

I was under the impression that you had to tear it open, put the drive into a Linux box, mount it, enable sshd etc., and then reinstall it.

No such hardware dance is required with the Linkstation.

You do need a bit of software dance, though.

The Infrant boxes are generally appliances. They are primarily aimed at Windows users who need a more flexible and easier to administer replacement for a Windows server. I use mine as a backup server. If my primary file server barfs, I can switch to the X6.

But demand has driven them toward shell (SSH) access in their next firmware revision. A new beta should be released soon (as in the next few weeks).

Sshd is already enabled on all their boxes. But only Infrant has the passwords. That's what will be available in the next release I hear. Also hopefully they'll bump it to a newer Debian version (they still run kernel 2.4).

Frankly, I'm not sure what having a shell account will do for me except maybe better diagnostic ability for me. But so many users have requested shell access that they'll be forced to give in. For Infrant, it's always been a support issue: ignorant users whack the box then expect free vendor support forever.
