Do you know of any decent data on the reliability of AWS?
Only anecdotal stories (not "data"). The average so far seems to be a few months, like around 3. It could be that the people who have long running boxes just aren't participating in the AWS forums because everything is fine for them.
With the help of Amazon I have discovered that my EC2 instance failed to renew its dhcp lease for some reason. Very annoying. I created a new instance last night and I am in the process of downloading my data from S3 and restoring it.
If you are interested in how to create your own virtual machine image for EC2 here is some documentation on how to install FC6:
http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/115/creating-your-own-fc6-instance-for-ec2/ And he has an update on his blog with changes to make it F7.
I don't much like the idea of any substantial system being designed so that "any one box might be mission critical" so I am really interested in the aggregate statistics for AWS.
I don't either. I wish I could justify running a whole cluster of AWS machines for my personal website and mail server but I can't. :)
