In upgrading the firmware on my home router, I re-encountered an option
for enabling or disabling UPnP. The default was enabled.
I think UPnP is bad because it is one of the many kludges required of us
because of NAT. But we have already had the anti-NAT discussion. :)
In general, discovery seems like a good thing -- unless one has reasons
for hiding things. But I don't know if UPnp really adds something beyond
other router-specific mechanisms?
If you have to use NAT then UPnP is probably good to have. I'm not
really aware of any risks from the outside due to your running UPnP.
Maybe someone on the inside could do something funny but I don't see
anything obviously critical.
