I had something similar happen to me one time.  After a power outage
I'll be damned if the computer just would not connect using its
built-in jack.  I had DSL at the time, so it was a little more
straightforward than with cable.  And besides, I also had a clock that
couldn't keep time, so I was pretty sure it was hardware failure.

About four months later the problems fixed themselves.  The clock and
the jack started working again.
