I have never been able to use totem for anything. I'm pretty sure it's because of the codec issue. You just can't make a perfectly legitimate yet useful video player. You have to go get mplayer or vlc or something and the extra codecs from outside the US to be able to do much with it. One of the first things I always do upon installing Fedora is go to fedorafaq.org and follow their instructions for getting all of the media stuff working. Not any fault of Fedora that it doesn't work as they are perfectly technically capable, I blame our ridiculous copyright and legal system for the mess.
