I've never seen totem work, first on fc4, and now on fc7.

On fc7, upon trying to play a DVD movie, it gives a seemingly useful message about needing ~some~ plugin, telling me to install the plugin, and then restart totem. But it gives me no clue how to get or install the plugin. It doesn't even mention what plugin is needed, just:

Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media.

I found *no* options regarding plugins in the menu. The help is useless in this regard as I didn't see *any* mention of plugins *anywhere*. In the help, even the link for gnome-feedback doesn't work.

Doing a search online for "totem plugin" yields a flood of how to get or how to do a totem plugin for mozilla.

How do I get plugins for totem? Which one do I need?

Totem[1] is a frontend to gstreamer. What you need are the plugins for gstreamer. The ones you want will not come from an official Fedora (i.e. RedHat) repository. You need to go to someplace like freshrpms.net. You will probably need all the plugins to get it to work. You can purchase licensed codecs from Fluendo <http://www.fluendo.com/> which work with the gstreamer plugin framework.

[1] I consider totem an absolute piece of crap and don't deal with it. I use mplayer and xine to play videos and DVD's.
