"lead" (rhymes with BEAD) is spelled led.

I never understood (or liked) that.

Actually it is spelled lede <http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lede>. It is written that way to avoid confusion with the element lead (symbol Pb), which was used a long time ago in typesetting.
