Yeah, exercising tools don't seem to exist -- at least by that name. Maybe disk performance tools might serve the purpose, though. bonnie++ lmdd dt iobench, iostat, iozone iometer, SourceForge.net (links for above list, see http://www.linux-1u.net/BenchMarks/) or even home-grown scripts can be effective, if given some thought. Then there's the manufacturer's diagnostic. Each mfgr has a downloadable floppy diagnostic (you may have to fire up Windows to run the floppy-disk creator). I have had overwhelming success getting warranty replacements when mfgr's diagnostic reports a failure.
