Large snip of probably irrelevant stuff.

I forgot. The actual disconnect was done at my Netgear router, which
decided that it should shut down the connection after a period of
inactivity. This can be fixed at the router by disabling one of its
security features.

Unfortunately all my correspondence with Netgear was archived on their
site, and seems to have disappeared, and I can't remember the details
of their suggested fix.

As I did mention, my fix was to change the configuration of ssh so it
sent a minimal message every 30 seconds, to keep the router from
timing out.
