Long story short, my brother and I spent a long time using the install
DVD and booting into rescue mode with no luck. We changed the grub boot
commands, compared what grub was doing with fdisk -l output, looked at
Google results for posts related to the error I was getting, messed with
fstab (before getting a clue and realizing that the system was never
even reading fstab because it was choking before it got that far), and I
even tried to re-install FC6 without formatting the partitions. Nothing
helped.

So, in went the FC7 DVD my brother had brought with him. 4 hours later,
it had finished upgrading from FC6. Reboot, the system works fine. In
fact, the battery monitor and power management - which never worked
before in RH 9.0 or FC4 - works like a champ as well.
