Plan to lose, so minimize your effort and heartache. It sounds like he's manipulating you into thinking your reasons will turn out to matter. I went through a very similar exercise last year. The outcome came down to one half-interested manager more or less saying, "Well, I decided I don't care about any of that. We're going to do what I said."
