I've been using a CRT display since forever and my current display is a 20 inch 1280x1024 display. It has good brightness, fast response and great viewing angle.

I'm now testing a 24 inch widescreen 1920x1200 Samsung 245BW LCD.

I have an L226WTQ LG Flatron Wide 1680x1050. It claims to have a 3000:1 contrast and 2ms response. It holds its color through a pretty wide field.

That seemed to be where the sweet spot on price/size/performance was about 6 months ago. I could buy 2 of those and get 3360x2100 and still be under the price of a 1920x1200. It looks like 1920x1200 is still roughly double the price of 1680x1050. It was about triple when I was looking.

Best of all, you can go to the Fry's and take a look at it.

However, I second the comment about DVI cables. It is *remarkable* how much better the screen looks. Looking at contrast and viewing angle at Fry's is okay, but pay no attention to sharpness and focus unless it's on a DVI cable.
