For giggles, boot a live cd of kubuntu 7.10 and see if the issue remains. If so, seriously, take look behind the LCD screen. You strike me as a thoughtful and careful kind of person. Take your time. The biggest issue will be unsnapping the face bezel from the lid, but I am finding many just pop right off with a thumbnail in the corner. Go slow, use a plastic wedge if you have to.
