I'm looking for a new notebook/PDA type thing, and I wonder if anything like what I want exists. If anyone knows, please tell me. I'm not really up on what's offered.
I have an Asus Eee PC which comes pretty close. You are welcome to take a look at mine before buying if you like. It costs $399

weight- under 5 pounds, and the lower the better. 3 or under perferred
2lbs.
size- Handheld for carrying (not laptop style underarm). 2 handed ok for use. Decent screen size. Some sort of hinge arrangement to get a good screen size is fine
Can be carried with one hand. 7" screen though. A 15" screen is going to result in an underarm style carry.
input- must have a keyboard. Small keyboard perfectly fine. Touchscreen nice, but not necessary.
Small keyboard
OS- prefer linux or other free Unix. Will live with Windows, but it needs to be full windows, capable of running any non-game app.
Linux from the factory.
Battery- at least 4 hours of active use
3.5 hours
Must be hobbyist programmable without extensive hacking to make it so
Yes.
Must be cellular network capable. Prefer choice of providers.
Has a mini-PCI slot and external USB etc.
Prefer wifi capable, to save money on the cell network.
Wifi works out of the box.
Sound capability a plus, for MP3s.
Sound works great.
I've looked into laptops, but they're heavier and bigger than I want. Most PDAs seem to have no keyboard, and writing that much with a stylus is out. I mainly see myself using it for web surfing, RSS reading, writing, coding, email, and calendar. So running firefox, an email client, open office, and emacs. I'm not interested in an iPhone- too closed down, I find the apple GUIs completely unusable, and no keyboard. I don't want a laptop- while the keyboard is a necessity, laptops are too bulky for what I want.
I'm really not sure coding on such a tiny machine makes much sense. If you are willing to use emacs on a small keyboard I guess that's your business.
