I had the same problem. It was a bug with my nvidia video and the mouse.
There's a setting in xorg.conf to resolve this. Under mouse section:
Option "HWCursor" "Off"

This didn't work 100% for me, the mouse pointer still would disappear.

I installed both the 64Bit on my desktop and the 32bit on my laptop. My
laptop refused to play mp3s but I was able to get the mp3 functionality
working on my desktop, and I installed exactly the same things on both
machines. The 64bit machine would slow to a crawl, and on my laptop, it
would continually try to access my DVD ROM even though there was nothing in
it.
Even disabling the dma on the DVD didn't always work. If I left the tray
open, it would stop. But my memory is bad, and I couldn't always remember
to open the tray as I was booting the machine.
I had more problems with Fedora 8 than any distro I've tried. I installed a
different distro and now both machines work fine.

Good luck!
