I'm one of those reports. I have a Broadcom card in my G4 Powerbook,
and I got it working--with WPA encryption to boot. This was in Ubuntu
7.04 at the time (PPC version, of course), and I didn't use the
Restricted Driver Manager at all.

However, if Jim is talking about the machine I think he is, I helped
work on it at an installfest and the steps that had worked on my
hardware didn't help in that particular instance... this stuff is
obviously too finicky for a single solution to work in all cases.
