I know this list can help, so here goes.

We're using a web hosting management suite that uses qmail (with spamd
and clamav for virus and spam protection) as the MTA. The software
also includes two web mail clients (Horde is the main one that
customers use). Replacing qmail would be difficult at best, but it can
be configured to send mail through another MTA. To date, we've had
problems getting qmail working well for all of our clients, especially
those that send bulk mail to customers/subscribers. One problem I've
run into with qmail is that there are several patches to it, but none
of the patches, etc. are configured in a standard way. So, looking to
see what is enabled and what isn't, making changes and tweaks, is
difficult because the configuration and location of files does not
match where the documentation says it should be.

What I'm looking at is adding a mail relay that would handle all the
heavy lifting, leaving qmail to just sending and receiving for local
mailboxes. That way I can leave qmail alone and not have to mess with
the configuration much. The relay would handle all the spam and virus
filtering, as well as relay incoming and outgoing mail to/from the
qmail MTA. In addition, we would like to add IMAP support for
ourselves and our customers.

So, what do the mail gurus on the list feel would be a good solution
for handling a LOT of mail for a LOT of customers (with the number of
customers growing every week)? This includes security (spam, virus,
blacklist, and whitelist support, configurable by customers) for all
customers. The servers we use are Opteron dual core, CentOS 5, virtual
managed IBM servers running under VMWare, dual homed with redundant
SANs.

TIA,

PGA
