Really. Look at that list of things it detects.
And what does it do when it doesn't find what it needs? It bombs out
with a cryptic error message. Pretty much the same result as if you
simply compiled it.
The big problem is that people bend their programming to suit what
configure does rather than solving the underlying problem of portability.
