My understanding is that software raids do parallel access effectively the same as hardware controllers. But hw offloads the parity and error checking/handling onto the cpu in the controller, thus gaining performance..
Not only that but Linux uses the MMX module for things like RAID5 XOR's and can probably do similarly for RAID6. MMX can far outstrip the performance of our disks leaving lots of cpu available for applications.
