On that page there is also a link to a ubuntu forum Trouble with external USB harddrive (Seagate FreeAgent) [SOLVED] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=494673 that's worth reading (including the thread replies) It looks like there may be a real fix of the problem rather than just hiding the symptom by disabling power management. It seems to require a recent kernel (>= 2.6.21) for one (udev rules and "allow_restart") approach, although there is another recipe (mount/remount) which doesn't need kernel support for allow_restart. Someone else suggested periodic sync, but that seems the same as disabling the spin-down. I have a FA-500G; I'll try the udev/allow_restart thingy when I get a chance to reread the instructions more carefully.
