There are references (http://www.nmrc.org/pub/advise/20060114.txt) to windows machines that will set themselves up as ad-hoc networks without even having the owner's permission. However, from Linux, I suspect you would have to configure it intentionally, especially since that laptop would basically have to be on two different networks, on the WAP and another to the ad-hoc network.
