It should be possible, but setting up dual display outputs has always
been horrible for me with the default drivers (with both nVIDIA and
ATI cards). However, dropping in the driver from the manufacturer has
always cleared that up. That can bring in its own problems, but
generally I find that it's worth it.

If you want to try open-source, be prepared for some major xorg.conf tweaking...
