Thanks for replying Carl.

This post is probably best addressed to Carl. I got the above printer
from him at a KPLUG meeting some time ago, but have just now tried to
use it - problems with our trusty Epson Photo EX.
1) The printer has a JetDirect port. Is there a way of assigning a
static IP address to the printer?
It had a static IP address when I last saw it. Did somebody enable
DHCP on it? If it is getting an address that way, you should be able
to ask the DHCP server what's going on.
It's getting its IP address dynamically from my router.
A printed test page will give the current IP address.
I'll do that when I can actually print. :)
Then telnet to that address and configure the JetDirect. I'm sure you can turn
DHCP
off, and set a static address. Of course as soon as you do that, your
telnet connection drops and you have to make a new one at the new
address.
I'll try that. Although it's not the important problem at the moment.
Alternatively, you can move the JetDirect card to a printer that has a
front-panel LCD display, like the HP 4 series. Configure it there
using the interactive menu.
No have.
2) I have little idea what the four LED's are on the front right panel.
If you really got the printer from me, it had home-made labels stuck
on below the LEDs.
I did indeed get it from you. I remember you telling me about the roller
cleaner. Alas, there were no labels (still?) on the front. There was a
fair amount of smudged black ink around the first two LED's though, as
if ink had somehow leaked from inside the case through capillary action.
3) What does the single blue button on the right front panel do?
Maybe it prints a test page if you hold it down long enough. I
forget. If you don't have the original manual ot might be available
on the HP web site. (helpful hint -- search the HP web site with
Google not with its own search engine)
Yes, the little documentation I've found tells how to print the test
page. I was wondering if the button did anything other than that.
I don't remember getting a manual for it. I searched the HP site, but
found no manuals. I suspect that the printer is of a vintage predating
PDF manuals. There seems to be very little useful anymore on the HP site
for this printer.
4) What does the four-position lever in front of the ink cartridges
select? What about the vertical rod to the right of the cartridges?
Selects which ink cartridge will be ejected by the vertical rod ejector.
Ah.
When trying the self test, the paper travels only about to the point
where the heads might start printing, and then stops. At that point, the
third LED (paper with folded corner) blinks. I think this means there is
a paper jam. I see no way of forcing the paper through via a form feed.
If I cycle power, the paper is ejected normally.
This printer has generically a lot of trouble with the initial paper
pickup rollers slipping. If they don't place the sheet squarely into
the next set of rollers, you get a feed jam. I used to clean the
rollers with TechSpray Rubber Roller Cleaner P/N 1612-280 about every
50 to 100 sheets of paper. I know the part number only because I
still have a nearly-empty bottle of the stuff.
I'll see if I can find that or something similar.
If I try to print a CUPS test page, the same sequence occurs. IOW, it
doesn't print.
Other than the above, it works fine ;)
That's all I remember instantaneously. Does this printer have the
auxiliary paper bin below, or does it have a manual single-sheet
feeder on the top? They are mutually exclusive, the paper from the
auxiliary bin is brought up the back and stuffed in where the
single-sheet feeder would be. Just trying to remember it better.
carl
It a single front paper bin. And the single sheet feeder in the back.
I've been using only the bin so far. I'll try the rear one.
Thanks again for the help.
