[1] the screen still receives the image from the system, which you can
see if you get very close to the screen...
FWIW, my laptop will not work with an external monitor unless it is
plugged in BEFORE I boot it up. It's not the first laptop I've seen
behave this way either. It also needs to be configured for a compatible
resolution and refresh rate.
